Vacancy Description:

Our client is a focused support services company working primarily with public sector institutions to supply effective, long-term solutions to support their core operations.
They are an independent, UKAS accredited laboratory (ISO/IEC 17025:1998 for asbestos surveys and BS EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 for asbestos sampling and analysis) that specialises in the testing and analysis of samples to monitor the Health and Safety of the environment in which we live and work which offers:

a) Asbestos Surveys, Asbestos Air Testing and Sample Analysis.
b) Occupational Hygiene Testing.
c) Analytical Chemistry.

Due to expansion they are now seeking a Laboratory Quality Manager.
PURPOSE:
Reports to Senior Chemist, and is responsible to the Manager Scientific Services, in the provision of chemistry, occupational hygiene and asbestos services to internal and external clients.


KEY TASKS (JOB SPECIFIC)

1. Provide analytical chemistry, occupational hygiene and asbestos testing services in a safe and effective manner.

2. Work off site in an unsupervised capacity to meet external clients expectations.

3. Carry out and develop all laboratory procedures as required by the Senior Chemist.

4. Maintain a working knowledge of organisational systems, procedures and specifications to enable interpretation of results.

5. Maintain calibration, trace ability and quality control to meet UKAS requirements.

6. Act as the laboratory Quality Manager

7. Liaise with customers to ensure their requirements are met using the most appropriate and cost effective methods.

8. Provide a service, which is flexible to meet internal and external customers working requirements.


KEY TASKS (POSITION SPECIFIC)

1. Use Instrumental (AA, IR, GC etc…) and Classical Gravimetric techniques to chemically analyse samples from the 3 environmental media.

2. Provide Occupational Hygiene support to internal and external customers by performing sampling at their place of operation, provision of advice, recommendation on operations and reporting of results.

3. Provide asbestos analysis in accordance with HSG248 and MDHS 100 for bulk samples, air testing and surveying.

4. Maintain a safe & healthy working environment.

5. Maintain Quality Assurance on the UKAS quality system by performing system audits.

6. Maintain internal equipment calibrations.

7. Perform all required external quality assurance checks (RICE & AIMS).

8. Document and close out all system non-conformances (CARs)

9. Develop new analytical methods and procedures as necessary to support development of the service offering.

10. Support the business in meeting internal and external customers requirements.







CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS / CRITERA

We aim to appoint the candidate most suited to the above position description and who best meets the technical/personal/academic criteria detailed below:

1. Mandatory : HNC or equivalent in Chemistry preferably with analytical chemistry experience or environmental chemistry experience. Instrumental techniques such as Atomic Absorption Spectrometry plus Infrared Spectroscopy and Gravimetric Techniques would be preferred.

2. Have a qualification in asbestos preferably a S301 or the P401, P402, P403 & P404 series of modules.

3. Have a competent analyst certificate for confined space entry.

4. Ability to use Modus and Microsoft Office packages.

5. Understand the requirements of a UKAS quality system.

6. Driving Licence.

7. Knowledge of Health and Safety.
